Are You Married Now?

A little boy asked his Dad, “What did you and Mom say to each other when you got married?”

“I promise to love you every day of my life as long as I live,” he replied.

“Dad,” he questioned, “you’re not married to Mom now, are you?”

The Bible says, “Husbands, love your wives!”

When a man accepts the responsibility of being married, there is no time limit placed on the depth or length of his love. There are no escape clauses for tough times or difficult days. There are no “gold stars” given for going a week without becoming irritable or raising one’s voice. There is no certificate given when husbands do not complain when dinner is late or the kitchen is messy, the bed unmade or the clothes not folded.

The love of a husband for his wife is to be continuous – even when interrupted by things that are little or large.

The love of a husband for his wife is to be consuming – never selfish, but always sacrificial.

The love of a husband for his wife is to be comforting – always available in tough or troubled times.

Prayer: Help me, Father, to be a helpful husband, a pleasant partner, a faithful friend and a gracious giver. May I be as loving to my wife as You are to me, as thoughtful about her needs as You are to mine and as patient to her as You are to me. Amen.

Going Out Together

A middle-aged couple was awakened one night when the smoke detector sounded.

Grabbing his wife by the arm, he led her down the hallway and out of the house into the front yard safely.

He looked at his wife expecting a word of thanks, but noticed that she was smiling.

Troubled, he asked, “Why are you smiling?”

“Tonight,” she answered, “is the first time that we’ve gone out together in five years.”

Unfortunately, there are too many times in life when we are brought together by tragedy rather than tenderness, hopelessness rather than helpfulness, pain rather than pleasure.

Success in marriage is more than finding the right person. It is being the right person. Success in family living is more than being together, it is loving together. Success in relationships is more than doing, it is being the person God would have you to be.

It is living as Jesus lived and loving as He loved.

Prayer: Strengthen us, Father, to live, speak and show love in all of our relationships. May everything that we think, say or do reveal the loveliness of our Lord and reflect His lovingkindness. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
