A Gift For Eternity

Timothy did well in his first semester at college. A sense of excitement was building in the family as the day approached when he would be home for Christmas. His mother wanted to make it a special event, one he would remember for years to come.

“Let’s give Timothy a wristwatch for Christmas,” she said. “He’s done so well and I want him to know how much we appreciate all of his hard work.”

“But,” protested his father, “what happened to that crush proof, waterproof, shockproof, scratchproof watch we gave him when he left for college?”

“He can’t find it,” said his mother.

In giving us the gift of His Son, God gave us Someone Who will be with us forever. A Gift that will be with us until the end of our lives and throughout eternity. An indestructible, unchanging, all-powerful, and ever-present Presence.

Jesus promised: “be sure of this – I am with you always and everywhere, even to the end of the age.”

Some would ask, “What does it mean that He will be with us? Did he not leave His disciples when He ascended into heaven?” No, He didn't.

When He left them physically, He sent the Holy Spirit to be His presence with them personally. We know He was called “Immanuel – God with us” when He was born. We know He is with us now through the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: It’s easy, Father, to lose sight of You and Your messages at this time of the year. But help us to pause, pray frequently and sense Your presence within us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Scripture For Today: Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

The Next Mile

Eric Severide was a news journalist who achieved much recognition and fame. In fact, he was considered to be an “elite correspondent.”

When he graduated from high school, a local newspaper sponsored him and a classmate, Walter Port, to travel by canoe from Minneapolis to York Factory - a journey of 2250 miles. When they came to the last leg of their journey, they were overwhelmed with what they faced - 450 miles through the rugged wilderness.

As they faced what seemed to them to be overwhelming odds, an old fur trader recognized their doubt. So, he offered a few words of simple advice: “Just think of the last mile.”

Great advice for them. Great advice for Christians.

We do not know what the journey before us may be. As we face today or tomorrow or next week, we do not know what lies before us. Sometimes we look back and recall unpleasant memories that have left us scared and scarred, perhaps fearful and frightened. So, we doubt.

But, we are here today, and have the final, reassuring promise of Jesus to hold on to for the rest of our lives: “Be sure of this, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

When we place our trust in the Lord, we have a Guide who has never forgotten His promises and a Guard who has never abandoned one of His children.

Prayer:  Thank You, Lord, for Your guarantee that You are and always will be with us no matter what. May we trust You always, knowing that Your grace is sufficient. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Scripture For Today: Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20

Never Left Alone

A flight attendant noticed an elderly lady having a difficult time buckling her seat belt. Recognizing her anxiety and obvious fear, the flight attendant went to the captain and explained what she had seen. Graciously, he accompanied the attendant to the lady and he asked, “May I help you, Ma’am?”
“Oh yes,” she replied. “This is my first flight. I must admit that I am rather frightened. Tell me, Sir, will you bring me back down safely?”
As he fastened her seat belt, he smiled politely and said, “Yes, Ma’am. I’ve flown hundreds of thousands of miles and never left anyone up there.”
In the closing verse of Matthew, Jesus promised His disciples, “And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
What a precious promise: “I am with you always.” But what does it mean? His memories would be with us? His teachings would be with us? His imprint on history would be with us? Of course. But that is only the beginning.
“I am with you” leaves no doubt that after Jesus ascended into heaven He would be with us through the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Holy Spirit would be Jesus’ presence that was with them then and is with us now and will never leave us. Ever.
Jesus said, “I am going away, but I will come back to you again!” Jesus continues to be with us today.
Prayer: Thank You, Father, for the assurance of Your presence in our lives. We are comforted to know that whatever comes into our life, You are there to protect us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Which Hand?

“Grandma,” said little Josie, “did you know that God created the world with His left hand?”
“My goodness, Honey, wherever did you get that idea? What do you mean He used His left hand?” asked Grandma.
“The way I figure it,” she explained, “is that God had to use His left hand because Jesus was sitting on His right hand.”
Josie heard the story in Sunday school and in her childlike faith accepted its truth. How precious is a faith that believes. And although we may not know all of the details, God reveals Himself and His plan for His creation and His children, us, in His Word. But there is another thought we must remember when we think about where Jesus is.  His final words to His disciples were, “Be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
What does it mean when He said, “I am with you?” Simply this: Jesus was with His disciples physically as He went about His work while on earth. After His resurrection He ascended into heaven. Now, He is with us through the work of the Holy Spirit. He knew there would be difficult days and trying times for His disciples then and now. So He gave His Word, “I am with you until the end.”
For those who accept Him as Savior there is no need to fear facing life alone. “I,” said Jesus, “am with you!”
Prayer: How blest we are, Father, to know that You are with us every moment of our lives. Give us a peace that comes from Your presence as we faithfully serve You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

"This I Know" People

There were many years when China would not allow missionaries into the country to witness the Gospel to the lost. Even believers from foreign countries were not allowed in to teach or preach the Word of God. Those who had been there worried about the converts that they left behind because they knew that Christians were being persecuted. The Chinese Christians had to be careful about sending out messages about their well-being.

Finally, one believer wrote a letter and included the words: “This I know people are well.” That puzzled the Chinese leaders. They could not understand what it meant. But it pleased the ones who received the letter because they knew what it meant. It came from the song, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”

What a gracious thought: “This I know people” are well. We will never be without sadness and sorrow, problems and pains, trials and troubles, sickness and suffering. God will give us His grace to grow, His strength to survive, His peace to prevail and His power to persevere.

We have His promise that His people will be well!

Prayer: Father, when things are troubling and threatening, when we face trials and temptations, conflict and confusion, worries and weaknesses, may we feel Your presence and power. May our trust in You enable us to triumph. In Your Name. Amen.

Scripture for Today: Matthew 28:20
