The Invisible Tug

A young boy was lying on the soft grass looking intently into the sky. He had a slight squint in his eyes as though he was searching for something. An elderly gentleman walked by and asked, “What are you looking for, son? What’s up there?” “A kite, sir,” came the reply. “But, I can’t see it,” said the man. “Neither can I,” said the boy. “But every now and then I can feel a tug.”
Like the boy and his kite, we may not be able to see God at work all the time, but every now and then we can feel Him tugging at the strings of our heart. We are surrounded by many magnificent displays of His presence, but they become commonplace, ordinary and sometimes just there.
But then a lovely flower appears unexpectedly, or we see a brilliant sunrise or sunset or a smile from a friend. When we least expect it, we receive a note of encouragement from a friend. When we are struggling with the difficulties of life we recall a verse of Scripture. We can sense His power in a thunderstorm or His energy in a bolt of lightning.
God is everywhere, tugging at our hearts waiting for us to see Him and wanting us to know He is with us.
Prayer: Lord, open our eyes to see You, our ears to hear You, our hearts to love You, and our lives to serve You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Seekers, Finders

Comedian Red Skelton was once asked to speak to a college student body on the subject of religion. At the end of his speech, during a question and answer session a student asked, “Why can’t I find God?”
Skelton quickly responded, “For the same reason you can’t find a cop. You’re not looking for one.”
King David had something to say to those who said that they can’t find God: “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display His craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak and night after night they make Him known.”
What is so obvious about God is that He is so obvious to those who are looking for Him. In this one psalm David writes that God can be found in the heavens (v.1-4), in nature (v.4-6), in the instructions He has given in His Word (v.7-11), and the story of redemption that can be witnessed in the life of the Psalmist himself (v.12-14).
What a wonderful summary of the story of salvation! We have been surrounded by innumerable displays of God’s craftsmanship that prove His power and presence. Yet, what He has done is not for Himself but for us! And ultimately and finally, He reveals Himself in His love for us as we see His Son die on the cross, overcome death and bring us life everlasting. David spoke of the might of God and the miracle of His Son when he asked God to forgive him for his sin. Have you asked God to forgive you for your sins?
Prayer: We thank You, Lord, for loving us so much that You did everything possible to reach and redeem us through Christ. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

A Psalm To Pray Each Day In May

TO TOUCH GOD AND BE TOUCHED BY GOD

A PSALM TO PRAY EACH DAY IN MAY

PSALM 19

Lord, the Heavens declare Your glory;

The stars reveal Your craftsmanship.

Each new day reminds me that You are the Creator.

Each new night shows me Your mighty power.

No one on earth can debate that You began all things,

Because the universe answers their arguments.

Your hand in creating the universe is seen everywhere,

Your majestic plan extends to the last detail.

You made the night as a tent for the sun,

Sunrise is like a bride coming out of that tent.

The new day is like a runner beginning a marathon,

The sun rises from one horizon to the other.

The sun gives life to everything it touches.

Your Scripture, like the universe, is perfect;

Converting the soul when applied.

Your principles never change,

Making the ignorant wise when learned.

Fearing You takes away doubts and ignorance,

Those who apply Your truth live forever.

Your decisions are always accurate,

Those who obey You live right.

Lord, Your truth is better than riches;

Obeying Your principles satisfies me completely.

Your truth keeps me on guard against danger,

The satisfaction of obedience is its own reward.

Because no one but You has the truth,

Keep me from making ignorant decisions as I follow Your word!

What a wonderful summary of the story of salvation! We have been surrounded by unimaginable displays of God’s craftsmanship that display His power. Yet His power is not an end in itself. It is revealed ultimately and finally in the work of His Son’s life, death and resurrection. David spoke of that when he asked God to deliver him from sin so that he could be free of guilt and innocent of great sin.

Prayer: We thank You, Lord, for loving us so much that You did everything possible to reach and redeem us through Christ. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

His Evidence Is Everywhere

A small child was fishing with his grandfather. Suddenly in a burst of excitement he asked, “Grandpa, can anyone see God?”

Thinking for a moment he answered, “Son, it's getting so that I can't see anything but God.”

Looking at the beauty of nature, we see the handiwork of God and are reminded that He is creator and Lord of all of life.

When I loose a loved one, I realize that He is a Friend that is much closer than a brother, and in my pain I find His comfort and compassion.

When I am filled with fear, I know that I can turn to Him as my refuge.

When I feel oppressed or overwhelmed, insignificant or insufficient, I know that my Savior has all the strength I need.

When I feel that my life is a shambles, I know that He can put it back together and that He will not give up on me.

When I feel that I have come to the end of my rope, He makes me aware that nothing is impossible with Him.

As sure as God is my Heavenly Father, I know that His presence and power, His grace and goodness, His majesty and might are with me now and will be in eternity. We will never be separated from Him and His love.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, may we truly believe that You are ever-present, never-failing, all-powerful and all-sufficient. May we trust You for all that we need. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
