Please Do Better

One day a television reporter received a letter from a young girl. It read: “When I grow up I want to do what you do. Please do it better!”
When we see others doing something, often anything, we are critical and think there are ways they could improve their work. And, it is much easier for me to want to change someone – actually, anyone – than for me to want to change myself.
Jesus said, “Judge not,” and He wondered how it was possible for us to see the speck in our brother’s eye in spite of the log that we had in our own eye.
One sure way to improve the quality of our lives is to turn them over to Jesus and to measure whatever we do by what He has done. When He imparts His wisdom in our minds, implants His strength in our bodies, instills His truth in our hearts, fills our hearts with His love, we will be so busy doing His work that we won’t have time to criticize others.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to keep my eyes upon You, my ears open to Your voice, my heart available to Your love and Your life an example for me to follow. Let me be less critical and more compassionate in my relationships with others: in Your Name. Amen.
Scripture for Today: Matthew 7:1-5 Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

The Wonderful Dog

Each night in his prayers, young James prayed for a dog. One day a dog followed him home from school and he thought it was the answer to his prayers. “Mom,” he said joyously, “didn’t God give me a wonderful dog?”

Shaking her head, his mother responded, “No! He’s nothing but a flea-bitten bag of bones that smells awful.”

Putting his arms around the dog’s neck he said in a loving voice, “But, Mom, look how beautifully he wags his tail.”

Most individuals determine beauty by physical characteristics or traits. “It’s what’s on the outside that counts,” is what many would say. Early in life we are taught what is attractive and what is not and to recognize and honor the external. But God sees things differently.

Fortunately for us, the Lord does not make decisions the way we do. He judges us by our faith and character, purity and humility. First and foremost He looks on the inside and sees us as we actually are. That is why I need to spend more time with Him. Everyone sees my outside, but only the two us, me and God, can see my heart. What do you and God see in your heart.

Prayer: Lord, You have saved me to reflect the beauty of Christ to others in this world. May my life always be attractive to others because of You. Amen.

How To Get Beautiful

“I know how to get beautiful,” bragged little Julie.

“How?” asked her neighbor.

“You rub this lotion on your body,” she answered, “just like my Mommy does.”

Julie must have had a beautiful Mommy. And she believed that her Mommy’s beauty was some “thing” that could be applied on the outside and a miracle occurred.

Beauty means many things to many people. For some it is a life-long, never-ending, relentless quest. Some individuals try to get rid of every flaw and blemish, believing that eventually perfection will be achieved.

God’s Word says that outward beauty is of no consequences unless the beauty comes from the inside. His Word reminds us that we “should clothe ourselves with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which is so precious to God.”

God created us to have purpose and reason for being. Therefore, we are His work of art? Everything about us has been designed to reflect His glory.

“People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at a person’s thoughts and intentions.” Beauty is something internal that is created by Someone Who is eternal. Said David, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

Prayer: Lord, we ask that our lives might reflect a gracious, God-given beauty that comes from living a life of holiness, worship, prayer and surrender that comes for knowing and being with You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
