The Cry Of The Poor

A young minister and a seasoned pastor were talking about serving the Lord. “When you were first beginning your ministry and were my age, what was your greatest desire?” he asked.

“To know the Scriptures and understand them to the best of my ability. If I could accomplish that,” said the seasoned servant, “I knew that I would know the Savior better and be able to serve Him more effectively.”

Our Lord wants each of us to have that same desire – to know Him personally, intimately. God is anxious to speak to each of us individually as He has always done. He called Abraham personally, wrestled with Jacob and addressed Moses from a burning bush. He spoke through prophets and priests, preachers and psalmists. Through inspired writers He gave us words of wisdom and volumes of knowledge. He even carried on a direct dialogue with David.

“I have seen violence done to the helpless and heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rescue them!” God has a special place in His heart for those who are poor and helpless. He heard their cries and promised to send a Messiah to rescue them from their oppressors – and He did. No one, even those who see themselves as insignificant, is beyond the eye or reach of the Lord.

Daniel was cast into a den of lions. Howl and cry as loudly as they could, they were not able to harm a hair on his head. As with Daniel, so with us. God will never allow His beloved to be destroyed by an oppressor.

Prayer: Lord, if we ever feel unimportant to You, help us to recall Your Word and know that You will rescue us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Scripture for Today: Psalm 12:5 “Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the LORD. “I will protect them from those who malign them.”

Our Needs From His Riches

An architect designed a cluster of office buildings around a central green area. After they were built he called a landscape architect and asked him to plant grass in the area among the buildings.

Puzzled, the landscape architect asked, “But where do you want me to allow space for the walks?”

“Don’t worry about that. Just plant the grass,” said the architect.

A few months later the buildings were filled with occupants. As the people went from one building to another they made pathways in the grass. The architect then decided it was time for the walkways.

“Do you see those paths created by the people?” he asked the landscape architect.

“Yes,” came the reply.
“That is where I want you to place the walks,” said the architect. “It was important for me to see the needs of the people going from one building to another before we located the walks.”

That’s the way our Lord works. When we have a need, He is ready to respond to us from His riches.

When we are afraid, He will increase our faith. When we grieve, He will give us His unending grace. When we are overcome with the world’s problems, He will give us His peace. His riches will match our needs and the paths we walk.

Prayer: Help us, Lord, to trust You completely for all that we need. We have the promise of Your Word that if we ask, You can and will meet our every need. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Scripture for Today: Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Is It The End Or The Beginning?

Two men met for prayer early one morning. After reading a passage of Scripture they knelt in prayer. Said the first, “Lord, it’s hard for me to pray. You know that I am at the end of all my resources. I have nothing left.”

Upon hearing his brokenness, his prayer partner put his arm around his shoulder and shouted, “How wonderful! Now you are at the beginning of God’s resources.”

Mark’s Gospel has an interesting story about a ruler and his resources. It reminds us of the importance and necessity of eternal values rather than earthly riches.

Jesus, in speaking of the emphasis we place on money said, “People with wealth will have a difficult time in getting into heaven.” In astonishment his disciples asked, “Well, if money won’t get us into heaven, what will?”

Calmly He replied, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”

Material possessions and our desire to acquire them tend to fix our hearts on the things of this world. When this happens, we lose sight of what is truly valuable: our relationship with God. He becomes unimportant.

For many, it is easier to pass the test of adversity than the test of prosperity. Prosperity places the focus on ourselves while adversity proves our need for God.

Prayer: Help us to realize, Lord, that without placing our trust in Your saving power and the redeeming love of God, we will never be with You in heaven! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Scripture for Today: Matthew 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

But Is It Your Psalm?

The 23rd Psalm has been called “Everybody’s Psalm” because it describes how God can meet all the needs of every Christian.

Are you looking for direction? The Lord will be your Shepherd providing you direction and safe passage throughout life.

Are you in need? As our Shepherd, He has everything we need.

Are you tired? He will provide the rest you need in meadows that are green and peaceful.

Are you anxious? He will lead you beside peaceful streams.

Are you weak? He will provide all the strength you need from His resources.

Are you having difficulty finding your way through life? He will lead you along right paths.

Are you going through dark valleys? He will walk beside you and protect your every step of life’s journey with His might.

Are you hungry? He will prepare a feast for you even though you are surrounded by your enemies.

Are you weary of life’s journey? He will anoint you with His refreshing, healing oil.

Is your cup empty? He will fill it until it overflows with mercy and goodness and thoughtfulness. And His unfailing love will surround you until you are with Him in His house. Forever.

Prayer: We rejoice in the goodness of Your grace, our Father, knowing that You will always care for Your own. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
