Take Time To Preach

Saint Francis is remembered for his greatness and goodness in spreading the Gospel of Christ – His Lord. His writings still inspire people today.

One day he said to a fellow “brother” who lived with him in the monastery, “Let’s go to town and preach to the people.”

As they walked the dusty road, they stopped to talk to people and play games with the children. Tired and hungry, St. Francis turned to his young companion and said, “Let’s return to the monastery.”

“But,” protested his young colleague, “when do we preach to the people?”

“Every step we took,” said St. Francis, “and every word we spoke and every smile we shared with the people and everything we did was our sermon. We have been preaching all day!”

The only sermon some people will ever hear are the words that come from our lips, and the only preaching that many will “listen” to is what they see in our lives. For many, we are what we say, and our lives demonstrate we believe.

John wrote, “Those who say they live in God should live as Christ did.” To live as Jesus did, we must obey His teachings and follow His example and do as He did – show others God’s love.

Years ago, a hymn writer asked most effectively: “Can others see Jesus in you?”

Prayer:  Father, may the disturbing words of that hymn trouble our minds and hearts and force us to examine our lives and then make changes that will please You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

What's In A Name?

During an inspection of his soldiers prior to a parade, Alexander the Great said to one of them, “Your name is Alexander. My name is Alexander. Either change your name or change your way of living!”
Another leader spoke of a Name and the honor it deserved. King David wrote, “He guides me along right paths bringing honor to his name.”
Names are important for many reasons. In Scripture the word name or words that have the same meaning as name occur nearly 1,100 times. Slightly half of that number refer to the name of God or God’s Son. But the use of the word name in the Bible always carries with it one’s identity or reputation.
Luke writes, “It was there at Antioch that the believers were first called ‘Christians’” or Christ-ones – emphasizing the fact there was something very different, yet something very similar, about those who were believers in Christ. This young church in Antioch included a mixture of Jews and Gentiles whose languages were Greek and Aramaic. And though their languages were different they had one thing in common: Christ. Yet together they lived Christlike lives that reflected His unending and always obvious love. Their lives were so different because of Christ that they had to be given a new name.
Question: Do you qualify for a new name? Do you qualify to be called Christian?
Prayer: Lord, we often falter and fail in our lives that bear the name of Your Son. Forgive us for those times when our lives do not reflect Your love and Your life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Scripture for Today: Acts 11:26 …and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

A Picture Of Christ

It was the first day in art class and the professor wanted to challenge his students to do something creative. Standing before them he suggested that they draw a picture that had meaning and interest. Pausing for a moment he turned to one student and said, “And what, William, are you going to draw?”
“I believe that I will draw a picture of Christ,” he replied.
“But,” said the professor, “no one knows what He looks like.”
“They will when I’m through,” said William.
People may see a representation of Christ on canvas, paper or cloth, but God expects them to see Christ in us – in the way we live. Scripture clearly explains, time and time again, that the Christian is the one, not an artist, who is to provide a “picture of what Christ looks like.”
Those around us who know we are Christians will gain an understanding and image of Christ by watching us. They “read” about Christ in how we act and react to the events that come into our lives. They “see” Christ in what we do for others because they know that we are responsible to show His love.
A Christian is to have a “mind” that thinks as Jesus thought, a “heart” that breaks when the ravages of sin are visible, a “hand” that reaches out to those in need, and a “voice” through which He speaks to share His message.
Prayer: Our Father, You have given us a tremendous responsibility to represent You to others. We admit we are unable to do this unless we allow You to live thru us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Scripture for Today: 1 John 2:4-6 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

Keep Them At Home

A man once said to Mark Twain, “It is my deepest desire to go to the mount where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments and recite them there!” Puzzled, Mark Twain asked, “Don’t you think it would be better to stay at home and try to keep them there?”
The Lord did not give us the Ten Commandments to review, but to reveal; not to look at but to live; not to admire but to acknowledge in the way we behave.
There are many who say one thing with their lips but show another thing with their lives. There are those who say the right things but live the wrong way. And there are some who speak the language of faith but give no evidence of it in their lives. The proof of our faith is not our words but our works.
Some say, “I am a Christian” but if they are watched closely there is no evidence of Christ in their lives. We are reminded by James that we are not only to be hearers of the Word, but doers of the Word. A good time to start doing good is now. A good place to start doing good is where you are.
Prayer: Father, help me to follow the directions for living that I find in Your Word. Do not allow me to deceive myself into thinking that I am acting on Your behalf when my behavior does not reflect what Your Word tells me to do. In Your Name. Amen.
Scripture: James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

"One Who Shines When It's Dark"

Mitch was afraid of being in the dark at night when the lights of his room were turned off. His father wanted to help him solve this problem. After thinking about it he decided that if he had a picture of the Lord in his room he would not be afraid of the darkness.
One Saturday morning he took Mitch to the Christian bookstore to purchase a picture of Jesus. They stood in front of the pictures of Jesus and looked at each one. None seemed to please him. Finally, in desperation, Mitch’s Dad asked, “We’ve looked at all of these pictures, Son, and you don’t want any of them. What kind of a picture of Jesus do you want?”
Looking at his Dad, Mitch smiled and said, “I want a Jesus that shines in the dark.”
That’s what we all need, isn’t it? We need a Savior Who will shine His light on our paths when they are uncertain; we need Him to illuminate the roads we have not traveled before and we need His brightness to turn our darkest hours into the glory of the rising sun.
Jesus brings the presence, the protection and the power of God into our lives. He is the Light of the world and from His light comes the Truth that all mankind seeks. Without Him we live in the darkness of doubt and despair. With Him we live in the fullness of God’s love, salvation and hope.
Prayer: Lord, we need You to shine brightly when we are facing a world of temptation, trouble and tears. Be the lamp for our path and the light for our journey. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Scripture for Today: John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

When Silence Is Golden

He was a new Christian. But it didn't matter: he wanted to be a witness for the Lord and let everyone know how grateful he was for his salvation.
On the final night of a revival meeting, he went to his pastor and asked if he could give his testimony. The pastor was pleased and said that he would call him to the platform when it was time for him to speak.
As the service progressed, George became rather nervous and fearful of standing before a group of people he did not know. But he smiled, asked God for strength and peace, and looked forward to the time to share his story.
Finally, his moment came. He walked boldly to the pulpit, placed his hands on each side as he had seen his pastor do on many occasions, and said, "Brethren."
And that was it. His fear overwhelmed him. Not able to remember what he was planning to say, the only thing he could utter was, "Will you please join me in three minutes of silence to honor our beloved Savior."
Our words of worship and witness need not be eloquent, only sincere. A genuine Christian is the best proof of genuine Christianity. Standing quietly to honor our beloved Savior may, at times, be the best thing we can do.
Prayer: Father, there are times when our lives speak so loudly that words are not necessary. May we realize, however, that in word or deed, we witness for You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Scripture for Today: …And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ… Philippians 1:7-12

"I Knew I Would Be Asked"

A nervous witness sat before the judge and jury. Everyone could see his fear. He could not hide it. The attorney turned to him and asked, “Tell me, did you see the accident?”
“Yes sir, I did,” he answered.
“How far away were you?” asked the lawyer.
“Twenty-two feet and two inches,” he replied.
“How can you be so specific?” came the next question.
“I knew some lawyer would ask me,” he said, “so I measured it.”
The motto of the Coast Guard it “Semper Paratus” – which means “Always Prepared.”
Writing in his first letter, the Apostle Peter said, “If someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it.”
Some Christians believe that faith is such a personal matter that it should never be discussed publicly. However, when the opportunity arises we must always be prepared to speak for our Lord. We need not be offensive or obnoxious, but gentle, sincere and able to share our message of salvation and hope.
Prayer: Help us, Lord, to realize that, ready or not, we are Your witnesses in the world. May we prepare today to speak Your truth tomorrow. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Scripture for Today: 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

The Value Of Commercials

R. T. Williams was surprised to realize that he was on an elevator with Lee Iacocca who was then the Chairman of Chrysler Corporation. In his excitement over the chance encounter he blurted out, “Mr. Iacocca, I really enjoy your commercials!”
“Sir,” replied Iacocca, “I couldn't care less what you think of my commercials. What I want to know is what kind of car do you drive?”
Iacocca was very aware of the fact that the commercials had no value unless people purchased and drove Chrysler cars. In like manner we need to ask ourselves a similar question. What value are the things we do for our Lord if they do not bring people to Christ as Savior and Lord?
Recall the story of Jesus calling Peter and Andrew. John tells us that they knew about Jesus since He had talked with them previously. When Jesus called them, they knew what kind of a man He was and were willing to give up everything that they had to follow Him.
Here's a question we must answer: Would the people who know us be willing to accept Christ as their Savior because of the difference He has made in our lives? Do they believe our faith matters?
Prayer: Lord, we are living examples of what it means to be Your followers. May our lives be so attractive that they will draw others to You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Scripture for Today: Matthew 4:18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

Is Your Light Shining?

It was in the darkness of night that we called on a mechanic to fix a problem with our car. As he worked under the hood his helper stood by holding a flashlight so he could see what he was doing.

After a short amount of time, the helper became bored, began to watch our dog and turned the light away from the problem the mechanic was repairing.

“Shine your light here,” demanded the mechanic. “That’s why you’re here.”

Jesus said that His followers were like “a city on a mountain, glowing in the night, for all to see.” What an interesting picture for us to consider.

If you have ever flown in an airplane at night and looked out of the window, you have no doubt been fascinated to see the lights of the cities below. Those cities cannot be hidden: their “glow” can be seen for miles in every direction when the night is clear.

What is true of the lights of those cities is true of the Christian. We always have the opportunity to glow like those lights for Christ. As His witnesses in His world, we are to be known for the light we can provide to those looking through the darkness for direction. Our faith must  be seen if we are to have any value to the lost who are looking for their way in the world. Jesus said, “Don’t hide your light, let it shine!”

Prayer: Help us, Jesus, to be the light You need in this world that we may lead and guide others to You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Scripture for Today: Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

Banner Up!

A young boy was sitting on a bench in a park when a stranger walked by and stopped. Looking at Will and his dog, he asked, “What kind of dog is that, young fella?”
Thinking the man was making fun of his dog, Will responded, “He’s a genuine police dog, Sir!”

Looking at the dog once again, he said, “Police dog? He sure doesn’t look like a police dog to me.”

“Of course not,” said Will. “He’s in the secret service.”

Perhaps that can be said of many Christians: “They are in the Lord’s Secret Service.” They don’t want anyone to know whom they serve.

Strange isn’t it that the Christian life begins with a public confession of faith? A declaration that we willingly repent of our sins and choose to follow the Lord. God’s Word makes it clear that “If we tell others that Jesus Christ is our Lord, and really believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

It’s all rather simple, isn’t it? If we say it, according to God’s Word, we are to do it. On one hand it’s easy to profess Jesus in church, but it is quite different to live as He would have us to live in the work place, the gym, the Parent-Teachers meeting, lunches with business partners, customers, or whomever we don’t see in church on a regular basis. But God’s Word says, "Set up your banners!”

Confession is much more than what Christians say. It is also what a Christian is. Our words are important, but not nearly as significant as what we do - especially when we think other Christians aren’t looking.

Prayer: Lord, we only fool ourselves if we think we can fool You. May we be witnesses without walls at all times. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Scripture for Today: Psalm 20:5b And in the name of our God we will set up our banners!

Quiet Christians

For many years two neighbors rode the same train to work in downtown Chicago. George went to church regularly and if pressed, would admit to being a Christian. But he never allowed being a Christian interfere with his life. On the other hand, Will never went to church and had no use for godly things. As they rode the train each day, they discussed business strategies, sports, politics, religion and current events. They rarely mentioned God.

One morning Will became violently ill and was rushed to the hospital. After a series of tests his physician informed his wife that he could not live longer than a few days - if that long. Frightened, his wife said, “Perhaps we’d better call George and talk about God.”

“George? Talk about God? Why George? He rarely mentioned God to me or that he knew Him. So I doubt that he would be the right person to call,” said Will. Without saying another word he passed into eternity - lost.

When George heard the news, he was stunned and filled with guilt. There was nothing he could do for Will now but go to God and ask for forgiveness and promise to become faithful. The words of the Psalmist echoed loudly in his ears: “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so!”

Unfortunately, the Kingdom of God is filled with too many citizens like George. They know the Lord from a distance but are unwilling to speak as His ambassadors. They believe that they have “theirs” and that’s all that matters. But there is no denying that if indeed God has redeemed us, we will present Him faithfully to others!

Prayer: Lord, forgive us for our silence and refusal to be faithful in presenting Your message to the lost around us! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Scripture for Today: Psalm 107:2 Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,

Hindering The Work Of The Lord

An evangelist was visiting with a group of missionaries in South America. He asked them many questions about their work, their families, the natives in that particular country and what they missed most while they were away from their families and friends.

As he was concluding his visit, he asked one final question: “What is the greatest problem you face in your work as missionaries?” The answer surprised him.

“Inconsistent Christians,” they replied. “The way they live confuses the unsaved because they are one way one day and another way the next day. They come between God and the sinner and make our work difficult!”

When we live inconsistent lives, those around us are unable to predict the difference that Christ makes in our lives or the difference He can make in their lives. There is no path for them to follow, no promises for them to claim and no peace for their anxieties.

The life of a Christian should be a bridge to the greatness of God that reflects the power of the risen Christ and the joy that comes from the presence of the Holy Spirit flowing through our lives.

Christians are responsible for setting an example for everyone to follow because we profess to be followers of the One who is “the Way, the Truth and the Life.” If we are irresponsible and inconsistent in the way we live, what do we have to offer others that is different from what the world has to offer? We must be careful not to stand or come between God and the sinner.

Prayer: Lord, may we always represent Your love to those around us in a way that will draw them to You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Scripture for Today: Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

I Want To Help Others

He could feel the damp moisture in the late night London fog each time a gust of wind blew over him. Blind and alone he was feeling his way down a deserted street with a white cane in one hand and a lantern in the other.
Eventually a stranger approached him walking in the opposite direction. Amused, and in a sarcastic voice he said, “Why are you, a blind man, carrying a lantern?”

“Oh, sir,” replied the blind man, “I’m not carrying it for myself. It’s for others. I want to help them so they won’t stumble over me.”

Often we think only of ourselves: our problems and our pains, our difficulties and our diseases, our hard times and horrible tasks.

It is the duty of the Christian to think of everyone and everything that may cause problems for ourselves and others as well. We are responsible to hold up a light in the darkness of this world for others who are seeking their way through life.

And not only to light a pathway for them in times of life’s darkest moments, but to help them find the “Light of the World” - Jesus - who is “the Way, the Truth and the Life!”

God’s Word is clear and unconditional when it states, “Each one of us will give an account of himself to God.” We must hold high the Light!

Prayer: Father, even though we are kind and gracious when we help others through times of darkness, it does not relieve us of our responsibility to present the Light. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Scripture for Today: 1 John 1:5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
